Denier is one of the most important words in hosiery. It tells you how fine, sheer, opaque, warm or durable a pair of tights or stockings is likely to feel on the leg. Yet denier is more than a number. At Fogal, it is part of the art of fine legwear: the balance between yarn quality, knitting know-how, fit, finish, color, comfort and the elegant “second skin” sensation that has defined the Maison since 1921.
Fogal’s current tights and legwear collection spans 8, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80 and 100 denier, offering everything from an almost invisible summer finish to dense, warm and non-transparent coverage for colder days.
What does denier mean?
Denier, often written as den or D, measures the linear density of a yarn. Technically, it is the weight in grams of 9,000 meters of yarn. The lower the denier, the finer and lighter the yarn. The higher the denier, the thicker, denser and more opaque the yarn.
In hosiery, denier helps explain how the tights will look and behave:
Low denier creates a light, transparent, barely-there appearance.
Medium denier offers more coverage while still allowing the leg to show through.
High denier creates an opaque or deep opaque finish, with more warmth and generally more resistance.
A pair of 8 denier tights is ultra-fine and delicate. A pair of 100 denier tights is dense, warm and much less transparent. Between those two points lies the full language of hosiery: ultra-sheer, sheer, semi-opaque, opaque and deep non-transparent.
The Fogal denier scale: from 8 denier to 100 denier
| Denier | Finish | Look on the leg | Best for | Fogal product lines examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | Ultra-sheer / nearly invisible | Barely there, skin-enhancing, light-reflecting | Summer, formalwear, natural-leg effect | Light & Cool |
| 10 | Ultra-sheer | Very transparent, elegant and refined | Eveningwear, bridal styling, special occasions | All Nude Catwalk |
| 15 | Sheer | Transparent with subtle structure or pattern | Everyday elegance, patterned sheer looks | Pois |
| 20 | Sheer | Soft veil, lightly perfecting | Daily polish, resilient sheer tights | Caresse |
| 30 | Semi-opaque | More color, more coverage, leg still softly visible | Year-round styling, color expression | Opaque |
| 40 | Semi-opaque to light opaque | Smooth, matte, polished | Workwear, everyday support, transitional weather | Flair |
| 50–60 | Opaque | Even, covered, velvety | Cooler days, everyday elegance | Velour Opaque |
| 80 | Opaque / warm opaque | Dense, smooth, warming | Autumn-winter, luxury natural fibers | Cocoon, Cashmere, Silky |
| 100 | Deep opaque / non-transparent | Full coverage, intense color, warm | Cold weather, long wear, deep black finish | Noir Absolu, Cosy |
8 denier: the art of the almost invisible tight
At the lowest end of Fogal’s scale, 8 denier is the finest expression of hosiery. It creates a barely-there finish that enhances the skin rather than covering it. Fogal’s Light & Cool Tights 8D are described as the finest tights in the collection, designed for a flawless, nearly invisible effect on warmer days. They use premium yarn and advanced 3D knitting technology to deliver elasticity, silky touch and an ultra-light feel. Because the construction is exceptionally fine, Fogal also notes that 8 denier tights should be handled gently.
This is the right denier when the goal is not “coverage” but refinement: a perfected natural leg, a polished summer look, a discreet finish under occasionwear, or a sophisticated alternative to bare legs.
10 to 20 denier: sheer, elegant and refined
Between 10 and 20 denier, tights remain transparent but become slightly more present on the leg. This is the world of classic sheer hosiery.
Fogal’s Catwalk Tights and Catwalk Stockings offer a 10 denier ultra-sheer look with soft 3D technology, a smooth luxurious feel, and refined details such as invisible heel or reinforced toe depending on the style.
At 15 denier, Fogal’s Pois Tights combine a sheer base with a diamond and micro polka dot pattern, adding texture and dimension while keeping a light, elegant appearance.
At 20 denier, Caresse Tights offer a sheer, matte, silky touch with a barely-there appearance and day-long comfort. This is an excellent denier for those who want the elegance of sheer tights with slightly more resilience than ultra-sheer styles.
30 to 40 denier: semi-opaque sophistication
The 30 to 40 denier range is where sheer hosiery begins to move into visible coverage. The leg is still subtly visible, but the finish becomes smoother, richer and more uniform.
Fogal’s Opaque Tights 30D are semi-opaque, matte and velvety soft, with a smooth appearance on the leg and a wide range of colors. They are made from 90% nylon and 10% elastane, with a comfortable waistband, anti-static finish, cotton-lined gusset, invisible heel and reinforced toe.
Fogal’s Flair Tights 40D add a refined matte finish and light support. They are also composed of 90% nylon and 10% elastane, combining softness, comfort, support and wearability for everyday elegance.
This range is ideal for customers who want tights that feel polished but not heavy. It is perfect for office dressing, color styling, transitional seasons and elegant day-to-evening looks.
50 to 60 denier: opaque, smooth and more durable
At 50 to 60 denier, tights become opaque. The leg is more evenly covered, the finish looks denser, and the product generally feels warmer and less fragile than a sheer tight.
Fogal’s Velour Opaque Tights 60D are designed as a true wardrobe staple: opaque, matte, smooth and velvet-soft. They are made from 90% nylon and 10% elastane, with a comfortable waistband, cotton gusset, invisible heel and invisible toe.
This is the denier range for everyday winter elegance. It gives a clean silhouette, more confidence in wear, and the kind of soft matte finish that works equally well with tailoring, knitwear, dresses and boots.
80 denier: opaque warmth and natural luxury
At 80 denier, tights offer a dense opaque finish and a noticeably warmer feel. This denier also opens the door to luxurious natural fiber blends.
Fogal’s Cashmere Tights 80D combine cashmere, silk, nylon and elastane. Fogal describes them as breathable, temperature-regulating and ultra-soft, with warmth from cashmere and softness and lightness from silk. The composition is 53% cashmere, 23% silk, 22% nylon and 2% elastane.
Fogal’s Silky Tights 80D are crafted from fine silk and designed to deliver an opaque 80 denier finish with a smooth knitted surface and soft natural sheen.
This is the choice for customers who want more than opacity: they want warmth, softness, breathability and the distinctive comfort of luxury yarns.
100 denier: deep opaque
At the highest end of the Fogal denier scale, 100 denier delivers a deep, opaque and non-transparent finish. It is the warmest, most covering option in the range and is generally less fragile than fine sheer hosiery.
Fogal’s Noir Absolu Tights 100D are designed for full coverage, warmth and an intense even black finish. They use a fine, high-quality yarn in a dense yet flexible structure, with a matte finish and velvet-soft touch. The composition is 90% nylon and 10% elastane.
Fogal’s Cosy Tights 100D offer a wool blend construction for softness, insulation and cold-weather comfort, with an opaque 100 denier finish.
This denier is the most practical choice for colder weather, deep color styling, maximum coverage and long winter days.
How denier changes the finish
Denier directly influences the final appearance of hosiery:
Ultra-sheer: 8–10 denier
Almost invisible, skin-enhancing, delicate and elegant. Best for summer, ceremonies and formal dressing.
Sheer: 15–20 denier
Transparent but slightly more present. A classic polished look for everyday or occasion wear.
Semi-opaque: 30–40 denier
Soft coverage with a visible color effect. More versatile, more durable, and ideal for styling.
Opaque: 50–80 denier
Smooth, even, covered and warmer. Excellent for autumn-winter dressing and a clean silhouette.
Deep opaque / non-transparent: 100 denier
Dense, warm, full coverage. Best for cold days, intense color and maximum confidence.
As denier increases, tights usually become warmer, more covering and less fragile. As denier decreases, tights become lighter, more transparent and more delicate.
